Grave markers today come in a variety of shapes and sizes. What you choose depends on a few factors. You must consider your budget, your cemetery rules, and the detail that you wish to have. Some people feel that some styles are just to flashy and extravagant, after all they are not there to see it after they are gone, while some feel that it is a final send off and want something that will stand out and be easy for family and friends to find.
They most basic head stone is the flush gravestone. It is level with the ground and one must the standing right over it to read it. Some cemeteries only allow these so the sight of some graves will not be blocked by large monuments. These are also the most economical option as well usually staring in prices around four hundred dollars but one can add etching and designs to make it more personal but also adding cost. They can go up to over one thousand dollars.
Another type of memorial marker is the vertical and horizontal tablets. These are the ones that stand up off the ground. While the horizontal is a little more expensive because they are usually larger than the vertical, both of these styles offer ample space for memorial tributes such as porcelain plaques or messages to the deceased such as a favorite scripture. These usually start around one thousand dollars and can range in price depending on style and material as well as detail. Many people favor this style because it is easy for people to spot in a crowded cemetery because the name is standing up instead of flush with the ground.
There are still yet another type of gravestone. These are the unique shaped headstone. These grave markers are similar to the horizontal and vertical because they stand up off of the ground. However they have unique shapes. They can come as two hearts joined together, a cross, a curving vertical stone, or a slanted stone which is a hybrid between a flush mount headstone and a vertical tablet. It is raised in the back and slanted forward making the name easier to see than on a flush headstone.
Which ever one of these styles you choose is a personal choice depending on your budget and your own style. Any of them makes a great memorial. Your own preference is what will make the biggest difference in which style you and your family want to choose. Many families make this decision together so that they can choose a uniform style that will please them all so that they can all have the same type of stones grouped together at the family resting place.
